Thank you Jennifer for hosting book club. It was yummy!

Books of 2011

Hi Ladies! Check it out - The New York Times best books of 2011!

In its silence, a book is a challenge: it can’t lull you with surging music or deafen you with screeching laugh tracks or fire gunshots in your living room; you have to listen to it in your head. A book won’t move your eyes for you the way images on a screen do. It won’t move your mind unless you give it your mind, or your heart unless you put your heart in it. It won’t do the work for you. To read a story well is to follow it, to act it, to feel it, to become it—everything short of writing it, in fact. Reading is not “interactive” with a set of rules or options, as games are; reading is actual collaboration with the writer’s mind. No wonder not everybody is up to it.” – Ursula K. Le Guin, Harper’s Magazine (via bookoasis) (via teachingliteracy)

The Wonder Girls!

Thank you Ann for hosting! Last night was so much fun! I think Babe would have been proud of us...well maybe not so much of the two intellectuals in the group...who shall remain nameless...but I guess we cannot have it all. The food was awesome as always. You are such a good cook! I am heading to the kitchen to enjoy a bowl of that wonderful soup. It is 60 degrees here in the dungeon/office! So it is on to the next! Hello All -

I have a challenge with hosting the book club on August 25. Can anyone swap their hosting month with me? Respond as soon as possible so I can work out something else if no one can swap.

Thanks -

Book Club and a fashion show??

Hey Book Club Ladies!

I have been laughing my bossypants off at our latest book!

On July 28th, coinciding with our book club meeting, there is a champagne tasting and Anthropologie fashion show with Grace Askew playing at the Dixon from 6 to 8. This sounded like something every one of us might be interested in attending, so I was wondering if you guys might like to go! I was thinking we could have book club at the Dixon during the champagne tasting part or have book club after this event. Would you guys be interested in this at all, or would you prefer to just keep it as it is? Just throwing out an idea!

Impressed?

So an Impressionist exhibit is coming to the Brooks. I thought it might be fun to read this book: The Private Lives of Impressionists and then go see the exhibit. The book is like People Magazine for impressionists. All the gossip...who hated who... who was really crazy....who was having an affair with who and who dumped who etc... I know we already have a book list established through September. The exhibit runs through October 9. I know we just finished an art book.

So here's my suggestion...read the book or not...the choice is yours (I'll be reading it) and then anyone who is interested maybe we could have a book club "field trip" to the exhibit before it closes... You can still enjoy the exhibit without reading the book?!? We might even time it with a special wine tasting there or just get some wine at the brushmark (club soda for Miss Angel...)

Well let me know if you're interested in the book or field trip as an extracurricular activity!

Love,
Jess

A Night of Beauty

I just want to thank Beth and Lana for a splendid evening. Great conversations, wonderful libations, and yummy food. The art catalogs were very thoughtful and lovely. I will cherish them forever! The trivia portion was fun and the prize was awesome!

On another note, now I know why the caged bird (me) talks too much...many hours of sitting in the basement by myself staring at a computer and yes ...The Aviator. I woke up this morning feeling like I have talked too much last night...sorry. Need to get out more often!

And lastly, for some reason last night after I got home, I couldn't go to sleep. I had a jukebox in my brain playing the New Kids on The Block and that song from Prince P###y Control! Playing some Mozart right now to help me get through the day.

Love you guys!

A Live Reading of Ulysses on Twitter

Since we talked about reading a classic, i thought this could be a good option. I read this book a long time ago and I must admit I cannot remember the content very well.

Not sure I can do the "twitter version" but I am intrigue by the concept.
